In 2020 DLR will welcome its new iSTAR (in-flight Systems and Technology Airborne Research) aircraft.

At the same time, our 47 DLR institutes are developing innovative technologies to tackle the challenges currently facing society. The SUBSEA Research Program is a partnership between NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) and NASA, as well as the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and other academic institutions. The project blends ocean exploration with ocean worlds research to address knowledge gaps related to the origins of life and the habitability potential of other planets in our Solar System.

The SUBSEA Research Program is funded by the NASA P-STAR Program, with significant infrastructure and in-kind support from the OER and from OET.

Almost 50 years after the end of the Apollo program, space agencies around the world are again considering manned flights to the Moon, Mars and asteroids. Involved in the European space shuttle program Hermès until its abandonment in 1992, Comex could not ignore this renewed interest in space exploration. It is already a partner in two projects for the development of space habitats and the training of astronauts for extra-vehicular exits (EVA), on underwater sites in the harbor of Marseille. These two programs are supported by the European Commission.
